With Anamaria Galea in Romania and our 6-kilo cabbage in Istanbul, we cooked Varza a la Cluj, a dish famous in the Transylvania region.

Layers of meat, cabbage, rice and other vegetables bake for what seems like hours, emitting tantalizing smells to hungry guests.

Gathering the ingredients in Istanbul took us to some interesting parts of Aksaray, (an area of Istanbul) and created conversations with many people about Romanians, Romania the Diaspora.
